October 2026 is shaping up to be one of the biggest months for Harry Houdini celebrations in American history.
One hundred years after the legendary escape artist died in Detroit on October 31, 1926, cities, museums, theaters, libraries, magicians and historians across the United States are bringing Houdini’s remarkable story back to life.
From Detroit, Michigan, and Salem, Massachusetts, to New York City, Riverside, California, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Omaha, Nebraska, Reading, Pennsylvania, and Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Houdini’s name is once again appearing on event calendars.
And this isn’t just about magic shows.
The October 2026 Houdini celebrations include historical exhibits, lectures, theatrical productions, séances, escape performances, magic shows, auctions, haunted attractions and special centennial events.
Why October Is So Important to Houdini
Harry Houdini died on October 31, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan.
That date has become permanently connected with Houdini history and with the traditions surrounding National Magic Day and National Magic Week.
The Society of American Magicians explains that National Magic Day was established in honor of Houdini and October 31 eventually became associated with National Magic Week, traditionally celebrated during the final seven days of October. (Magic Sam)
